In this regard , the report prepared by my friend and colleague Mr Hutchinson is a document of very great significance , in terms of its rigour and profundity and given the time at which it is being produced : a time when public opinion in the European Union is becoming aware of the fact that , both on the basis of the principle of solidarity , and given the exodus of emigrants fleeing from under - development towards our countries , Europe has no alternative but to apply all of its efforts to the development and stabilisation of the countries of the South
In dieser Hinsicht besitzt der Bericht meines Freundes und Kollegen , Herrn Hutchinson , eine sehr große Aussagekraft , da er exakt und fundiert ist und zu einer Zeit entstand , da sich die Öffentlichkeit in der Europäischen Union der Tatsache bewusst wird , dass aufgrund des Solidaritätsprinzips und auch des Migrantenzustroms aus unterentwickelten Ländern in unseren Teil der Welt Europa gar keine andere Wahl hat , als alle Kräfte auf die Entwicklung und Stabilisierung der Länder des Südens zu richten
That is what we are going to try to do. What I have presented this afternoon is a small programme – not small in terms of its breadth but in terms of its profundity – moving in the direction of our fundamental objective : bringing the road map to its conclusion and in good time , not in the next hundred years. Rest assured that we will take all the measures we can.I would also like to stress that the withdrawal from Gaza , if carried out within the context of the road map process , is something we support and which would be a good thing. It would be good if there were the law approved by the Knesset allowing withdrawal of the settlements and funding to allow the people living there to leave
Darum bemühen wir uns. Heute Nachmittag habe ich ein kleines Programm vorgestellt - klein nicht im Sinne seines Umfangs , sondern im Sinne seiner Tiefe - , das auf unser grundlegendes Ziel ausgerichtet ist , nämlich den Abschluss des Fahrplans innerhalb eines überschaubaren Zeitraums und nicht erst in hundert Jahren. Seien Sie versichert , dass wir alles in unserer Macht Stehende unternehmen werden.Ich möchte auch unterstreichen , dass der Rückzug aus dem Gaza - Streifen , sofern er im Rahmen des „Road Map“ - Prozesses erfolgt , von uns unterstützt wird und eine gute Sache wäre. Es wäre gut , wenn die Knesset das Gesetz verabschieden würde , das die Aufgabe der Siedlungen und eine finanzielle Unterstützung des Umzugs für die derzeit dort lebenden Menschen ermöglicht
National interest has not simply been erased in today's world. But those differences will be magnified if we start to disagree too frequently about how national the national interest really is. It is our profound judgment in Europe , the product of our history and experience , and not of some flabby prejudice , that the national interest is invariably pursued best through international cooperation , and we should not be ashamed to make that point loudly and clearly.One last point : Mr Elles has done a great deal to promote , to deepen our transatlantic dialogue and our transatlantic relationship. But I see from him an amendment on the order paper which causes , I am bound to say , and I am not a notoriously thin - skinned old hack , a slight frisson in the Commissioner for External Relations. The honourable Member deplores the absence of strategic thinking from the Commission.The honourable Member's profundity as a strategist may be greater than mine and it may even be greater than Dr Kissinger's , but I just want to say one thing to him : the steel dispute with the United States is not a result of a lack of strategic thinking on the part of the European Commission
Wir haben eine sehr konkrete Vision und wissen , dass wir auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks davon profitieren und die Sicherheit und der Wohlstand in der Welt gefördert werden , wenn wir zusammenarbeiten und der internationalen Gemeinschaft mit unserem Beispiel zeigen , wie die Herausforderungen des neuen Jahrhunderts bewältigt werden können. Probleme wird es immer geben , wenn nationale Interessen aufeinander prallen , auch in einer wichtigen Partnerschaft. Nationale Interessen sind in der heutigen Welt nicht einfach verschwunden. Diese Meinungsverschiedenheiten werden aber verstärkt , wenn wir zu oft darüber streiten , wie national diese nationalen Interessen tatsächlich sind. Wir in Europa sind der festen Überzeugung , und diese Überzeugung stützt sich auf unsere Geschichte und unsere Erfahrung und ist nicht nur ein Lippenbekenntnis , dass nationale Interessen am besten durch internationale Zusammenarbeit verfolgt werden können. Wir sollten uns nicht scheuen , diese Überzeugung laut und klar zu äußern.Abschließend möchte ich betonen , dass Herr Elles einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Förderung und Vertiefung unseres transatlantischen Dialogs und unserer transatlantischen Beziehungen geleistet hat. Auf der Tagesordnung sehe ich jedoch einen Änderungsantrag von ihm , der mich als Kommissar für Außenbeziehungen leicht schockiert , obwohl ich ansonsten nicht so empfindlich bin. Der Herr Abgeordnete bedauert das fehlende strategische Denken der Kommission
