For the first time , 25 nations held free elections simultaneously ; they elected their assembly to represent them , the , the European people. The division of Europe was thus ended once and for all , although the process of reunifying Europe is still proceeding unabated.This Parliament is a marvellous illustration of the greatest strength of this new Europe , with its diversity of ideas and experiences , its history and also its life stories and its hopes. We know that the tone of Europe is not that of a solo instrument but that of an orchestra , and the same applies to this Parliament. Europe is not monochrome but colourful , as the logo of the Austrian presidency symbolises

Mr President , I take this opportunity to extend a warm greeting to you. Mr President , ladies and gentlemen , these reports are paving the way for the post - euro period. The subjects they discuss are so important , and time so limited , that I must be all the more selective and succinct in my remarks. The tourism sector accounts for a sizeable share of the economies of some Member States. To the complexity of that sector , with intricate upstream and downstream links , is added the complexity of the different situations existing in individual Member States. This complex complexity is not reflected in Mrs Torres Marques report , which I consider to be excessively optimistic and , if I may be so bold , excessively monochrome - that is , rose - tinted - imbued as it is with the author's unshakeable faith in European construction as it is currently proceeding.Tourism , and some individual tourists , will no doubt receive debatable advantages from the introduction of the euro
Herr Präsident , ich möchte die Gelegenheit nutzen , Sie herzlich zu begrüßen. Herr Präsident , sehr verehrte Kolleginnen und Kollegen , diese Berichte sind eine Vorbereitung auf die Zeit nach der Einführung des Euro. Die Themen , auf denen der Schwerpunkt liegt , sind von so großer Bedeutung , daß es aufgrund der knappen Zeit um so dringender ist , die Beobachtungen selektiv und knapp zu halten. Der Fremdenverkehrssektor ist für einige Mitgliedsstaaten wirtschaftlich bedeutend. Zur Komplexität des Sektors mit vielfältigen Verbindungen allerorts kommt noch die Komplexität der unterschiedlichen Situationen in den einzelnen Mitgliedsstaaten. Diese - wenn ich so sagen darf - komplexe Komplexität kommt im Bericht der Kollegin Torres Marques nicht zum Ausdruck , den ich zu optimistisch finde und - wenn ich mir erlauben darf , es zu sagen - zu einfarbig , zu rosarot und zu stark geprägt vom unerschütterlichen Glauben der Autorin an den Aufbau Europas , so wie er zur Zeit durchgeführt wird.Im Fremdenverkehrsbereich werden einige Touristen mit Sicherheit durch die Einführung des Euro fragliche Vorteile haben
