Rivalry between Europe and America is a dream come true for the enemies of Europe and the United States , and this is perhaps something that should be borne in mind by the participants in the demonstration in Mainz , referred to by Mr Pflüger. I say this as a representative of a country in which the overwhelming majority of citizens were opposed to the Iraq war , but are simultaneously in favour of close ties between Europe and the USA

Mr President , on 22 and 23 February , the US President , George W. Bush , will visit Europe , where , after a visit to Brussels , he will be received in Mainz by the German Chancellor. I am delighted that protests will be held on the occasion of this war criminal’s visit , and I myself will be addressing the demonstration in Mainz. The fact that transatlantic relations are now so good surprises some people , but this is merely down to the fact that the EU’s policies do not differ in any fundamental way from the line followed by the US Government. The debate on the EU Constitutional Treaty made it apparent that EU Heads of State or Government want the EU , too , to become a global and even military player. Two examples of this are the militarisation of the EU , with the inclusion of an express commitment to rearmament in the new EU Treaty , and the fact that economic and monetary policy is based on neoliberal principles
– Herr Präsident. Am 22. und 23. Februar kommt der US - Präsident George W. Bush nach Europa. Nach seinem Besuch in Brüssel wird er in Mainz vom deutschen Kanzler empfangen. Ich bin froh , dass es Proteste gegen den Besuch dieses Kriegsverbrechers geben wird. Ich persönlich werde bei der Demonstration in Mainz reden. Manche wundern sich , dass das transatlantische Verhältnis nun so gut ist. Das hat damit zu tun , dass es keine grundsätzlichen Unterschiede der EU - Politik zum Kurs der US - Regierung gibt. Die EU - Regierungschefs wollen , dass auch die EU als globaler , auch militärisch agierender Akteur auftritt. Auch die Debatte zum EU - Verfassungsvertrag hat dies gezeigt. Zwei Beispiele : Die Militarisierung der EU mit ausdrücklicher Aufrüstungsverpflichtung im neuen EU - Vertrag und die Festlegung der Wirtschafts - und Währungspolitik auf neoliberale Grundsätze. Die EU als Weltmacht , meist im Einklang mit , aber auch mal in Konkurrenz zu den USA , das ist für mich die Horrorvorstellung der transatlantischen Beziehung
