A further problem we must avoid is overloading Doha with an oversized agenda. I would stress that Doha has a specific mission. We must not overload Doha and the WTO by attempting to use them to put right a number of issues which we feel need to be rectified in the world today. Certain positions expressed on the environment , health and employment standards do nothing to defend us against accusations that the advanced countries and Europe are actually using the extension of the agenda for protectionist ends. The developing countries are in a strong position and are not so very far from the truth when they say that all these so very politically correct issues actually serve to slow down the opening up of our markets to goods which have to come , first and foremost , from the least developed countries
Ein anderes Problem , das es zu vermeiden gilt , besteht darin , eine zu umfangreiche Verhandlungsagenda vorzuschlagen und der Konferenz in Doha aufzubürden. Ich wiederhole es : Die WTO hat eine spezifische Aufgabe , und wir dürfen die Doha - Konferenz und die WTO nicht überfrachten , nur um in deren Rahmen eine Reihe von Fragen zu reformieren , die uns in der heutigen Welt nicht gefallen. Einige zu den Themen Umwelt , Gesundheit und grundlegende Arbeitsnormen geäußerte Positionen sind nicht hilfreich , um sich gegen die Vorwürfe , wonach die entwickelten Länder und die Union die Erweiterung der Agenda für protektionistische Zwecke nutzen würden , zu verteidigen. Die Entwicklungsländer haben meines Erachtens ein leichtes Spiel und in gewisser Hinsicht auch Recht zu behaupten , all diese politisch korrekten Fragen dienten in Wirklichkeit nur dazu , die Öffnung unserer Märkte für vorwiegend aus den am wenigsten entwickelten Ländern eingeführten Waren zu verzögern
