| Mr President , I am pleased to see that Commissioner Monti has now arrived alongside Commissioner Kinnock. The Chamber may seem empty , but I can assure you , Mr Monti , that I have just walked through the building and there are 300 Members currently sitting glued to their television screens watching this debate in their offices. So we have the House's undivided attention.Secondly , the most important point I should like to make is to stress how successful the conciliation procedure introduced under the Maastricht Treaty has been. I very much appreciate the fact that under the Irish presidency , when the last such procedure occurred , we were able to reach a successful compromise through the intervention of Commissioner Monti and the Irish Minister | Herr Präsident , es erfüllt mich mit Zufriedenheit , daß Herr Kommissar Monti jetzt neben Herrn Kommissar Kinnock auch eingetroffen ist ; der Saal sieht zwar leer aus , mein lieber Freund , aber ich bin vorhin durchs Parlament gegangen und versichere Ihnen , daß 300 Abgeordnete in ihren Büros vor ihren Fernsehbildschirmen sitzen und fasziniert unsere Aussprache mitverfolgen , Herr Kommissar Monti. Das ist Punkt eins. Das Parlament sieht uns also aufmerksam zu.Zweitens , der wichtigste Punkt , den ich bemerken möchte , ist der große Erfolg des Vermittlungsverfahrens von Maastricht. Ich finde es wichtig , daß wir unter der irischen Ratspräsidentschaft - es war das letzte Vermittlungsverfahren durch das persönliche Eingreifen Kommissar Montis und des irischen Ministers - einen erfolgreichen Kompromiß finden konnte |
