The Commission’s response was an encouraging one , which , while falling short of what was required , ensures that the kind of incident that took place recently will continue to be met with firm opposition by the many people in Europe who believe that the free movement of people and ideas is an integral principle of the European project itself

Mr President , as an MEP for Sicily , I would like to express my satisfaction and appreciation , and thank my fellow Members who , like me , voted for the amendment this morning , which has shown how , in the end , common sense prevailed when faced with the willingness shown by the European Council.There is no doubt that the overwhelming majority of Parliament has today concluded the procedure at second reading by accepting the common position. Of course , we were once again saddened at the attempt by the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance , accompanied in this action by the Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left and by some Italian left - wing democrats – with an amendment which , fortunately , only received about 50 votes – to abort the continuation of the plan for the Messina bridge on the trans - European route from Berlin to Palermo.If the amendment had been passed , over and above the very serious detrimental effect , which was mentioned at the end of the procedure , the Italian Government – which has already launched the process to begin construction of the bridge – would not have received the 10% contribution from the Union’s funds , as provided for in the Treaty. Even more than the sum involved , there is obviously the political significance that such a vote would have had

Ich gratuliere Herrn Bradbourn zu seinem ausgezeichneten Bericht über den geänderten Vorschlag einer Entscheidung des Europäischen Parlaments und des Rates zur Änderung der Entscheidung Nr. 1692/96/EG über gemeinschaftliche Leitlinien für den Aufbau eines transeuropäischen Verkehrsnetzes , den ich voll und ganz unterstütze , insbesondere hinsichtlich der Strategie der Aufwertung des transeuropäischen Verkehrsnetzes , dem wichtigsten Schlüssel für das reibungslose Funktionieren des Binnenmarktes.Ich unterstütze mit Nachdruck die Forderung von Herrn Bradbourn , dass das Europäische Parlament in die Entwicklung der Projekte zur Entwicklung des transeuropäischen Verkehrsnetzes eingebunden werden und diese begleiten muss.Ich unterstütze ferner die Aufforderung , dass in Artikel 3 Absatz 2 des geänderten Vorschlags der Kommission ein besonderer Verweis auf die regionalen Flughäfen erfolgen muss , denn auch sie spielen eine wirklich wichtige Rolle bei der Entwicklung des transeuropäischen Verkehrsnetzes.Von Anfang an diente die ablehnende Haltung der Gegner der Messina - Brücke jedoch offenbar – mit Verlaub gesagt – als Vorwand und stand vor allem im Widerspruch zu den legitimen Interessen Siziliens und Süditaliens
