South Africa exercises strong political influence over the Mugabe Government , and South Africa must show strong and decisive leadership on this issue for the people of Zimbabwe and also for the people of Africa , who are having to watch this leader lead his country down into the swamp

What the Commissioner calls ‘some sectors’ are actually 93 out of 163 sectors required compulsorily to open up their markets. What kind of benchmarking is that. Which bench are we planning to use to push these countries into the swamp of poverty. I do not even understand how the word ‘benchmarking’ is being used in this context. Give them a chance at self - determination. It is right that they be given scope to devise their own policies. It is high time we stopped demanding measures in return and instead started giving , and so I would appeal to Commissioner Mandelson to summon up his best Christmas spirit in Hong Kong and take pleasure in giving without making it conditional on receiving something in return
Was der Herr Kommissar als ‚einige Sektoren’ bezeichnet , sind in Wahrheit 93 von 163 Sektoren , bei denen eine zwangsweise Marktöffnung verlangt wird. Was ist denn das für ein Benchmarking , mit dem wir diese Länder in den Sumpf der Armut stoßen. Ich verstehe nicht einmal , wie das Wort „Benchmarking“ in diesem Zusammenhang überhaupt verwendet wird. Wir sollten ihnen die Chance zur Selbstbestimmung sowie Spielraum für die Entwicklung einer eigenen Politik geben. Es ist höchste Zeit , dass wir damit aufhören , Gegenleistungen zu fordern und stattdessen anfangen zu geben. Daher appelliere ich an Herrn Kommissar Mandelson , für Hongkong in bester Weihnachtsstimmung zu sein und sich am Geben zu erfreuen , ohne dies von Gegenleistungen abhängig zu machen

Die Technologien dieser Informationsgesellschaft werden zwar neue Produkte und neue Dienstleistungen hervorbringen , doch werden sie auch gesellschaftliche Umwälzungen bedeuten , und mittelfristig oder auch schon kurzfristig ist absehbar , daß sich neue Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten bieten werden , die wir nutzen müssen.Unser Ziel sollte es sein , zu verhindern , daß sich durch die Informationsgesellschaft die Unterschiede zwischen unseren Regionen verschärfen ; sie muß vielmehr ein Instrument des Zusammenwachsens sein ; die Informationsgesellschaft darf die Gegensätze in unseren Gesellschaften nicht noch verschärfen , sondern sollte zu ihrer Integration beitragen ; sie darf nicht nur der Spekulation mit Kapital dienen , sondern such der Investitionstätigkeit ; sie darf keine unkontrollierbaren Monopole schaffen , sondern muß Vielfalt und Pluralismus fördern
