Mr President , Mr President - in - Office of the Council , Commissioner , with the permission of the Members of this House , I would like to use this speech to make a statement relating to my twin roles , as rapporteur for Malta , and also as co - chairman of the Joint Committee on the Czech Republic.Today makes me proud , as Parliament has today demonstrated its openness and signalled to the candidates for accession that they are welcome among us. European parliamentarism has thereby shown signs of being very much alive. The impression I get from today's debate with the candidate countries is of how self - evident the whole thing is , that it is normal for Europe to meet together , for the first time in a peaceful , voluntary and democratic way. For Austria in particular , a country in the heart of Europe , this means that , following Europe's division by the consequences of the Second World War , a corner has been rounded on the way to a better , more economically and socially stable Europe with an added value in terms of security policy
Herr Präsident , Herr Ratspräsident , Herr Kommissar. Gestatten Sie , verehrte Abgeordnete , dass ich diese Rede zum Anlass nehme , sowohl in meiner Funktion als Berichterstatterin für Malta als auch als Ko - Vorsitzende des Gemischten Ausschusses zur Tschechischen Republik Stellung zu nehmen.Ich bin stolz auf diesen Tag , weil das Europäische Parlament heute ein Zeichen der Öffnung gesetzt hat und den Beitrittskandidaten signalisiert , sie sind uns willkommen. Der europäische Parlamentarismus hat damit ein kräftiges Lebenszeichen gesetzt. Der Eindruck , den ich von dieser heutigen Aussprache mit den Beitrittskandidaten hatte , ist ein Eindruck der Selbstverständlichkeit. Es ist normal , dass Europa zusammenfindet , erstmals friedlich , freiwillig und demokratisch. Gerade für ein Land wie Österreich , das im Herzen Europas liegt , bedeutet dies nach den Zeiten der Spaltung Europas als Folge des Zweiten Weltkriegs eine Wende hin zu einem besseren , wirtschaftlich und sozial stabileren Europa mit einem sicherheitspolitischen Mehrwert. Wir knüpfen hier an eine mitteleuropäische Tradition an , die uns gerade jetzt , anlässlich des 90
