Although the Hungarian Revolution was crushed by the overpowering columns of tanks that rolled into the country , today we know that the events in Budapest , Prague and Gdansk did not happen in vain , and that the victims did not give their lives in vain

As a result , enlargement would be made considerably easier and any negative budgetary consequences for the EU would not be overpowering. The transitional arrangements will also facilitate the process. Regardless of the problems we will encounter , it is vital that we never lose sight of the overriding goal of making Europe a better and more harmonious place by means of enlargement.Here the aim is to develop , structure and support employer/worker relations in European policy
Außerdem wird die Reform eine Erweiterung wesentlich erleichtern , ohne den Haushalt der Union allzu stark zu belasten. Der Prozeß kann zudem durch Übergangsregeln entlastet werden. Trotz der Schwierigkeiten , die wir in jedem Fall zu bewältigen haben , ist es äußerst wichtig , das übergreifende Ziel , Europa durch die Erweiterung noch besser und harmonischer zu gestalten , niemals aus den Augen zu verlieren. Das ist notwendig , um Europapolitik überhaupt verständlich zu machen oder sie umsetzen zu können
