Mr President , if we support the social dimension of the European Union , we must give it practical expression by giving priority to the protection of the health and safety of workers. I support the extension of the existing directive on carcinogens to include dust from oak and beech wood , category 1 and category 2 mutagens and vinyl chloride monomer. I also support the rapporteur's view that the directive should cover wood dust from all types of hardwood.Some may argue that sufficient scientific evidence has not been produced to justify this. I dispute that approach
Die Aussprache ist geschlossen.Die Abstimmung findet morgen um 10.00 Uhr statt.Versicherungen.Ich stelle erfreut fest , daß wir uns mit den meisten Änderungsanträgen des Parlaments in Übereinstimmung finden , die zu einer größeren Effizienz des Vorschlags beitragen und somit von der Kommission übernommen werden können
Existing European Union budget lines are not being effectively utilized , or at least not sufficiently. Obviously , structural measures must also be taken to prevent a repeat of these disasters. Countries in South - East Asia and Latin America must implement effective legislation and take different measures to combat the slash - and - burn methods , or manage them better.The Commission should also move more quickly in drawing up guidelines for importing tropical hardwood into the Union. More support must be given to the sustainable management of crops , whilst the Mega - Rice project should be examined critically , at the very least. We must prevent erosion and further deforestation. The Union could take the initiative and organize an international conference on the issue. I hope Parliament will support my amendment on this shortly.Lastly , Mr President , El Niño is blamed for everything
Vorhandene Haushaltslinien der Union für diesen Zweck werden nicht gut , zumindest nicht ausreichend genutzt. Es müssen natürlich auch strukturelle Maßnahmen getroffen werden , um eine Wiederholung dieser Katastrophen zu verhindern. Die Länder Südostasiens und Lateinamerikas müssen wirksame Gesetze erlassen und sonstige Maßnehmen treffen , um die Rodungs - und Brandmethoden zu bekämpfen oder besser zu regeln.Die Kommission muß außerdem die Aufstellung von Richtlinien für den Import von tropischen Harthölzern in die Union beschleunigen. Nachhaltiger Anbau muß unterstützt werden und das Mega - Reisprojekt muß zumindest kritisch betrachtet werden. Erosion und weitere Abholzung müssen verhindert werden. Die Union könnte die Initiative ergreifen , hierzu eine internationale Konferenz zu organisieren. Ich hoffe , daß das Parlament meinen Änderungsantrag dazu unterstützen wird.Abschließend , Herr Präsident , El Niño wird die Schuld an allem gegeben. Diese Länder sollten bedenken , daß El Niño bald erwachsen ist und dann noch schlimmer wird
