What concerns me , unlike Brian Crowley , is that Zimbabwe's dictator Robert Mugabe will probably be attending the summit. It is not worthy of the European Union to sit at the same negotiating table as Mugabe. Mugabe's misrule and corruption are paralysing the entire country. The political opposition are harassed and thrown into prison , free speech does not exist , there are food shortages in a country which was once Africa's granary , and hundreds of thousands of people have no homes. The economy is falling to pieces , inflation is more than 7 000% , the average age is the lowest in the world , and 25% of the population are infected with HIV

Die Wirtschaft bricht zusammen , die Inflation liegt bei über 7 000 % , die durchschnittliche Lebenserwartung ist die niedrigste der Welt , und 20 % der Bevölkerung sind mit HIV infiziert

In dem Bericht wird der Nachdruck auf die Einhaltung des Vertrags über die Nichtverbreitung von Atomwaffen gelegt , während das enorme Sicherheitsrisiko , das unzulänglich überwachte oder halb aufgegebene Nuklearanlagen in den ehemaligen Sowjetstaaten und einigen anderen Ländern darstellen , sowie ihr potenzieller Missbrauch durch Terrororganisationen wie Al Quaida unerwähnt bleiben. Wir müssen uns als Europäische Union dringend mit den betroffenen Ländern und internationalen Organisationen zusammensetzen und dafür Sorge tragen , dass die erforderlichen Mittel bereitgestellt werden , damit diese tickende Zeitbombe unschädlich gemacht werden kann. Nicht nur für Süditalien , sondern auch für die Poebene besteht die Gefahr , zu verdursten. Ich möchte Europa auf die Wassersituation in der Poebene aufmerksam machen , weil sich daraus äußerst schwerwiegende Folgen für Europas Kornkammer ergeben könnten , wie diese Großregion genannt wird , die für die Zukunft der Produktion in unserem Lande so wichtig ist
