I was going to go for a swim in the sea - it was an extremely hot day - at the Italia bathing resort off Corso Italia , and I was about to dive into the water when I was recognised by an old childhood friend , a municipal councillor called Egidio Saccone , the owner of the establishment , who said to me : Mr Fatuzzo , as a Member of the European Parliament , speak out and try to ensure that enthusiasts who practise all kinds of sports - swimming , boxing , field and track events , football , cycling , tennis and so on and so forth - receive a pension as well. I am sure that they will listen to you , they will tell all the 15 States and they will do something about it. And

We have done so because we are in favour of vessels that are fishing illegally in the waters of the region concerned being subject to inspection.It is indefensible that the Antarctic cod is on the verge of being wiped out as a result of this illegal fishing. Furthermore , these vessels often use the longline method whereby fish waste is thrown in front of the vessel to attract more fish. This method is particularly harmful to wildlife. Every year it causes the deaths of many albatrosses which dive in front of the ship to eat the fish waste and perish. We strongly object to this method , which is frequently used for illegal fishing in the waters in the region concerned , because it is a threat to the albatross
Wir stimmten dafür , weil wir die Kontrolle von Fahrzeugen befürworten , die in der betreffenden Region illegal fischen.Es ist unverantwortlich , daß der antarktische Dorsch wegen dieser illegalen Fischerei in seinem Bestand gefährdet wird. Außerdem fischen diese Schiffe oft mit Langleinen. Dabei werden Fischabfälle vor dem Schiff ins Wasser geworfen , um mehr Fische anzulocken. Diese Methode ist denkbar ungeeignet , müssen doch dadurch viele Albatrosse jedes Jahr ihr Leben lassen. Die Tiere tauchen vor dem Schiff nach den Fischabfällen und sterben dann. Wir lehnen diese Methode , die beim illegalen Fischen in der betreffenden Region oft eingesetzt wird entschieden ab , weil der Albatros dadurch gefährdet wird.Bericht Lulling
However , there is a worry that the prices might take a nose dive now. I want some reassurance that this will be taken into account.Thirdly , the problem of the size of the UK fleet. This is a major problem first of all because of flags of convenience - a problem mishandled by the UK in the past - and also because of the failure on the part of the UK to decommission. There is a major problem there which I want to flag up.I have one or two complimentary things to say. It is very good that Mrs Bonino comes to us now after the debacle at the end of December and says : Let us now talk seriously about the conservation measures , about MAGP IV . The things which we knew were not going to be implemented in December we can now discuss in a realistic way and we have time for a constructive dialogue which will take into account the views of the fishing sector
Jetzt wird jedoch befürchtet , daß die Preise in den Keller sinken könnten. Ich möchte eine Zusicherung darüber , daß dies berücksichtigt werden wird.Das dritte Problem ist die Größe der britischen Flotte. Das ist zunächst ein größeres Problem wegen der Billigflaggen - damit ist Großbritannien bisher nicht richtig umgegangen - , und auch weil die britische Regierung eine Stillegung versäumt hat. Auf dieses große Problem möchte ich hinweisen.Ich möchte noch eine oder zwei Anmerkungen machen. Es ist sehr zu begrüßen , daß Frau Bonino nach dem Debakel Ende Dezember zu uns kommt und sagt , daß wir nun ernsthaft über die Erhaltungsmaßnahmen und MAP IV sprechen sollten. Die Dinge , von denen wir wußten , daß sie im Dezember nicht umgesetzt werden würden , können nun von uns realistisch erörtert werden , und wir haben Zeit für einen konstruktiven Dialog , in dem die Ansichten des Fischereisektors berücksichtigt werden
