| Mr President , for the second time in the past six months , I should like to protest to the House at the insulting of Catholics. I have been prompted to do so this time by the desecration of an image of the Holy Mother of Częstochowa at an exhibition held in the Brussels Parliament to mark the 25th anniversary of Solidarity. The Black Madonna of Jasna Góra is the most sacred being apart from God for Polish people , and , in the words of a poet , ‘even those who believe in nothing believe in her’.I would remind the House that according to the Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms , everyone has the right to freedom of religion. As well as making religious tolerance compulsory , this guarantees respect for devotional objects | – Herr Präsident. Zum zweiten Mal in einem halben Jahr protestiere ich in diesem Hohen Haus bereits gegen eine Beleidigung der Katholiken. Anlass dazu liefert mir dieses Mal die Schändung eines Bildes der Heiligen Mutter von Tschenstochau in einer Ausstellung im Brüsseler Parlament zur Erinnerung an den 25. Jahrestag von Solidarnosc. Abgesehen von Gott selbst , ist die Schwarze Madonna von Jasna Góra für das polnische Volk das Allerheiligste , was es gibt , an sie glauben , wie der Dichter sagt , selbst die , die an gar nichts glauben.Ich möchte dem Hohen Haus in Erinnerung rufen , dass laut Konvention zum Schutz der Menschenrechte und Grundfreiheiten jeder Mensch das Recht auf freie Religionsausübung hat. Damit wird nicht nur religiöse Toleranz zur Pflicht erhoben , sondern zugleich die Achtung von Devotionalien garantiert |
