Mr President , how many times is it now that the human rights situation in Zimbabwe has featured on our agenda here as a matter for urgent debate. How many times have we stood here impotently railing against the way in which Mugabe oppresses his people. We have not always been unanimous about everything , but on Zimbabwe we do have some kind of consensus

If I took the liberty earlier of railing against the British Prime Minister , Mr Tony Blair , in the Hemicycle , this is because it is wholly unacceptable that we should hear the President - in - Office of the Council of the European Union claim that a positive decision had been made regarding the removal from our fishermen of one of the tools of their trade , namely the driftnet , whose development the European Community encouraged just a few years ago.Is it not particularly scandalous to see such an irresponsible and arbitrary measure , which is plunging entire seaboard populations into a state of despair , being hailed by the presidency as a great event
Wenn ich mir vorhin erlaubt habe , hier in diesem Hause den britischen Premierminister , Herrn Tony Blair , anzuschnauzen , so tat ich dies , weil es ganz einfach unannehmbar ist , wenn man sich anhören muß , daß der Ratspräsident der Europäischen Union die Tatsache , daß unseren Fischern ihr Arbeitsinstrument entzogen wird , als eine positive Entscheidung hinstellt : ich spreche von den Treibnetzen , deren Weiterentwicklung die Europäische Gemeinschaft vor einigen Jahren gefördert hat.Ist es nicht in besonderem Maße skandalös , wenn eine unverantwortliche und willkürliche Maßnahme , die sämtliche Küstenbewohner in die Verzweiflung stürzt , als ein erfreuliches Ergebnis hingestellt wird , das dem Aktivkonto der Unionspräsidentschaft gutzuschreiben ist
