The warring factions are once again squandering the country's wealth and reducing the people to penury. It is not fair to blame just one side for this - the government and the army must share some of the guilt. They have failed to provide stability and are proving extremely two - faced. We must not allow ourselves to be distracted by political tricks and stratagems. In my view , neither side is willing to make any serious efforts to achieve lasting peace.What should we do to try to stop the spiral of violence. I hope that the United Nations will not relinquish its efforts and that MONUA will stay on after 26 February. The international community must continue to provide support , but it will not be easy to maintain donors commitment to Angola. We must try , however.Finally , Mr President , a point of order. There is an unfortunate misprint in the joint motion for a resolution , which says that it was tabled on behalf of the ELDR Group by Messrs Bertens , Fassa and Cunha , whereas the last two went over to the PPE Group a considerable time ago. The mercenaries were not returned to their countries and , in defiance of the agreement , the government continues to buy arms , particularly from Russia , which is a member of the troika and the UN Security Council
Die verfeindeten Parteien verschachern wie gehabt die Reichtümer des Landes und bringen die Bevölkerung an den Bettelstab. Im übrigen sollten wir nicht nur eine Partei dafür verantwortlich machen. Regierung und Militär trifft gleichermaßen Schuld. Sie haben nicht für die notwendige Stabilität gesorgt. Sie haben zwei Gesichter. Wir dürfen uns nicht in politische Manöver hineinziehen lassen. Auf beiden Seiten stelle ich mangelnde Bereitschaft für ein ernsthaftes Bemühen um einen dauerhaften Frieden fest.Wie können wir die Spirale der Gewalt stoppen. Die Vereinten Nationen werden hoffentlich nicht aufstecken und das Mandat der MONUA auch über den 26. Februar hinaus verlängern. Die internationale Gemeinschaft muß weiterhin Hilfe leisten. Es wird jedoch nicht leicht sein , das Engagement der Geber für Angola wachzuhalten
