The voting yesterday and today shows that there is a clear majority in Parliament in favour of closing the accounts for 1996. However , this does not mean that the Commission is now being given a permanent carte blanche for all the years to come. It means that the European Social Democrats will monitor the Commission night and day in order to uncover the truth for the benefit of the ordinary citizens of Europe. I would advise the Commission to be on its mettle in the future. We shall be constantly snapping at its heels , and while we were a watchdog before , now we shall be one with teeth , so that we can clear up all these matters
Es heißt vielmehr , daß die europäischen Sozialdemokraten die Kommission lückenlos kontrollieren wollen , um zum Nutzen der Bürger Europas die Wahrheit an den Tag zu bringen. Ich empfehle der Kommission , sich in Zukunft warm anzuziehen. Wir werden ihr auf den Fersen bleiben. Früher waren wir Wachhunde , jetzt sind wir bissige Wachhunde , damit wir hier endlich Ordnung schaffen können. Die Kommission hat die notwendige Bereitschaft gezeigt , das sollten wir honorieren , und die anderen sollten diese Dinge nicht für ihren persönlichen Wahlkampf benutzen
