In 1945 , the world was emerging from World War II and Europe lay in ruins. The United Nations was set up as a beacon of goodwill and hope , and of a desire to free the human race from a kind of tribal relationship of estrangement and exclusion. The idea was to lead us towards a greater civilisation in which we were united in the dignity of equals , and it was through dialogue that this was to be achieved

Die UNO sollte ein Fanal des guten Willens und der Hoffnung setzen und dem Wunsch Ausdruck verleihen , die Menschheit von einer Art Stammesbeziehung der Fremdheit und Ausgegrenztheit zu befreien. Sinn und Zweck des Ganzen war es , uns zu einer größeren Zivilisation zu führen , in der wir in der Würde gleichberechtigter Partner vereint sind. Das sollte durch den Dialog erreicht werden
Let us remind ourselves that the European Parliament is the only European Union body that is elected directly , constituting an embodiment of the will of European citizens and national sovereignty , and as such , it plays a crucial role in reducing the democratic deficit of the European institutional system , in creating a citizens’ Europe and overcoming estrangement from the institutions of the European Union
Erinnern wir uns daran , dass das Europäische Parlament das einzige Organ der Europäischen Union ist , das direkt gewählt wird und so den Willen der Bürger Europas und die nationale Souveränität verkörpert und damit entscheidend zum Abbau des Demokratiedefizits des europäischen institutionellen Gefüges beiträgt , indem es ein Europa der Bürger errichtet und die Entfremdung von den Organen der Europäischen Union überwindet
– Mr President , Mr Barroso , ladies and gentlemen , I address you , Mr Barroso , because I welcomed your speech this morning in which you revived Europe’s great project. We have at last heard the Commission raise its voice loudly in this House in order to revive politics and to secure the Union's due role on the international stage. This is the Commission that we want and that Europeans want too. It is a Commission that is shaking off the burden of bureaucracy , which is mainly to blame for the people of Europe’s estrangement from the institutions
Herr Präsident , Herr Barroso , verehrte Kolleginnen und Kollegen. Ich wende mich an Sie , Herr Barroso , weil ich Ihre Rede von heute Vormittag , in der Sie das große Projekt Europas wiederbelebt haben , begrüße.Endlich haben wir in diesem Hohen Haus gehört , wie die Kommission ihre Stimme erhoben hat , um der Politik neuen Schwung zu geben und der Union die Rolle auf der internationalen Bühne zu sichern , die ihr gebührt. Das ist die Kommission , die wir wollen und die auch die Bürger wollen. Eine Kommission , die die Last der Bürokratie abschüttelt , die die Hauptursache für die Entfremdung der europäischen Bürger von den Institutionen ist
