This prize is awarded jointly by the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen and the European Parliament. The award ceremony took place on 29 April in Aachen. Our young friends have been visiting the European Parliament since yesterday and are in the distinguished visitors gallery right now.I welcome the winner of the first prize , representing the project Students Without Boundaries' , Emöke Korzenszky from Hungary , Ilona Mikoczy from Slovakia , Agota Demeter from Romania and Zoltan Csadi from Slovakia

Seit gestern besuchen unsere jungen Freunde das Europäische Parlament und befinden sich im Moment auf der Tribüne.Ich begrüße als Gewinner des ersten Preises stellvertretend für das Projekt Students Without Boundaries Frau Emöke Korzenszky aus Ungarn , Frau Ilona Mikoczy aus der Slowakei , Frau Agota Demeter aus Rumänien und Herrn Zoltan Csadi aus der Slowakei. Herr Lorenzo Marsili aus Großbritannien vertritt den zweiten Preis , der an das Projekt Festival of Europe in London ging
Madam President , with the problem and the report by Mrs Keppelhoff - Wiechert , we are getting into the myths of Prometheus or Demeter , and it is true that biotechnologies will go through both good times and bad.Mrs Keppelhoff - Wiechert rightly informs us that through this technology we can obtain a whole range of modified plants , that 32 million hectares have already been cultivated , that 6 , 000 experiments have already been conducted and that there have been positive results. We can fight against viral diseases in sugar beet , the European corn borer , fungus on potatoes which can lower harvests by 20 % and we are even building plant factories. So we have brought about the third industrial revolution whereby the mylolepine in potatoes has increased adhesive capacity , gene technology allows an increase in the content of oleic acid in oilseed rape , we can manufacture detergents , lacquers and cooling liquids and we even have larger fish and transgenic poplars which produce more wood. Finally , the dream of having heaven on earth is to become a reality.However , there are still risks involved. Firstly , there is trickery involved in the terminology. The word bio is a favourable word and the word techno reminds us of a sort of natural music which would be modified. As soon as the words techno or bio are used , young people are likely to be supportive.In addition , there is a contradiction : a contradiction between fallow land and the genetically modified organisms. We cannot use the fallow land because of world overproduction and then produce GMOs in order to fight hunger , since , if there is a hunger problem , we might as well recultivate the fallow land.There is also a contradiction between the GMOs and the MGQs , because we cannot increase the yield of oilseed rape and then have maximum guaranteed quantities under the GATT for rape if we do not have enough
Frau Präsidentin , man kriegt Berichte auf den Tisch , über die man sich freuen kann , und Frau KeppelhoffWiechert hat einen Bericht verfaßt , der zukunftsträchtig ist , der ein sehr verantwortungsvolles Thema behandelt und sehr ambitioniert ist. Ich glaube , daß Lebensmitteltechnologie und insbesondere die Biotechnologie auch enorme Auswirkungen auf die Lebensmittelverkäufer hat , auf die Gastwirte und auf die Konsumenten. Frau Schierhuber hat schon darauf hingewiesen , daß wir einen guten rechtlichen Rahmen brauchen , der es ermöglicht , diese Produkte gefahrlos zu erzeugen. Kennzeichnung ist ein ganz wichtiges Thema , und ich glaube , es besteht auch hier Einigkeit darüber , daß Kennzeichnung erfolgen muß.Prinzipiell muß man sagen , daß es genfreie Lebensmittel nicht gibt. In jedem Lebensmittel , das wir zu uns nehmen , sind Gene drin , und wenn wir heute verschiedene Lebensmittel essen - Gemüse , Obst , Milch oder Fleisch - , dann kommen diese Gene in unserem Magen zusammen und werden dort verdaut. Wir wissen auch , daß aus Lebensmitteln , die derzeit auf rein biologischer Basis hergestellt werden , viele Krankheiten entstehen können. Dr. Flande hat in seinem neuesten Buch nachgewiesen , daß Lebensmittelallergien Probleme auslösen können , wie Migräne , Neurodermitis , Pilzinfektionen , Schnupfen , Asthma , chronische Müdigkeit , Übergewicht , Juckreiz , Schwellungen , Herzrasen - und dies durch ganz natürlich hergestellte Lebensmittel. Wir müssen zusehen , daß wir Lebensmittel finden , mit denen wir in Zukunft auch eine Chance haben , bis ins hohe Alter gesund zu bleiben. Das ist eine wichtige Aufgabe , bei der die Landwirtschaft , die Lebensmittelvertreiber und letztlich auch die Konsumenten zusammenarbeiten müssen , um die Gesundheit auch bis ins hohe Alter erhalten zu können.Mit diesen Worten möchte ich , außer der Berichterstatterin für ihre Arbeit zu danken , nur hervorheben , daß das Prinzip Vorsicht immer an erster Stelle stehen muß
