| If we lose it this will have profound social repercussions. A varyingly timed rest day is not an acceptable alternative. There will be a rest day , but it will be part of a pattern of variable working times within the family and society. That may fit nicely with a 24 - hour economy , but it is socially destructive and leaves less and less room for social living. It will foster the individualization of society and is thus ultimately an asocial phenomenon. There is more to life than work and production. For all these reasons I think we should keep Sunday as the public day of rest. In that way we shall be obeying the commandment and upholding the best traditions of European culture and history. It seems incredible to me that a British Government should go to the European Court of Justice and try to put Sunday into the same category as every other day | Sie aufzugeben wird tiefgreifende soziale Folgen haben. Ein Ruhetag zu wechselnden Zeiten ist keine annehmbare Alternative dazu. Es gäbe dann zwar einen Ruhetag , der aber Bestandteil eines Musters wechselnder Arbeitszeiten in Familie und Gesellschaft wäre. Das mag gut zu einer 24 - Stunden - Wirtschaft passen , ist jedoch gemeinschaftsschädlich und läßt dem gemeinschaftlichen Erleben der Dinge immer weniger Raum. Dies würde die Individualisierung der Gesellschaft fördern und ist deshalb letzten Endes eine asoziale Erscheinung. Der Sinn des Lebens besteht in mehr als Arbeit und Produktion. Aus allen diesen Gründen trete ich für das Festhalten am Sonntag als dem öffentlichen Ruhetag ein. Wir gehorchen damit dem erlassenen Gebot und bleiben damit den besten Traditionen der europäischen Kultur und Geschichte verhaftet. Ich fordere das Parlament auf , diese Entschließung einstimmig zu unterstützen |
