Thank you for the floor , Madam President. Hungarian public opinion witnessed a remarkable manifestation right in the middle of the Georgian crisis. The Russian ambassador to Budapest made a considerably undiplomatic declaration against the leader of the opposition , Viktor Orbán , since Mr Orbán stood up for Georgia. The Russian ambassador - this cannot be described any other way - threatened the Hungarian opposition , and thereby most of Hungarian society , with the malevolence of the Russian state. It is not difficult to decipher the coded message : whoever votes for FIDESZ must face the disapproval of the Russians

Der russische Botschafter in Budapest äußerte sich besonders undiplomatisch über den Führer der Opposition , Viktor Orbán , da dieser für Georgien Partei ergriffen hatte. Der russische Botschafter - anders lässt es sich nicht beschreiben - drohte der ungarischen Opposition , und damit dem Großteil der ungarischen Gesellschaft , mit dem Groll des russischen Staates. Die Botschaft zu entschlüsseln ist nicht schwer : wer für FIDESZ stimmt , muss mit Russlands Missbilligung rechnen
Mr President , I think that it should be the Turkish Government itself , as much as the European Parliament , which ought to be showing interest in preserving and promoting the rich heritage handed down from the depths of history in Constantinople by the various cultures and religions. Sadly , however , the Turkish Government is in the business of stoking up fanaticism and malevolence , and these have attained their culmination , one might say , in the statement by the Minister for the presidency on the conversion of the church of Saint Sophia into a mosque. The fact that this resolution on religious freedom in Turkey has the support of all the political groups is very encouraging , and it is pleasing that all of the groups have on this occasion accepted our resolution calling on the Turkish Government to respect the character of the church of Saint Sophia
Herr Präsident , meiner Meinung nach obläge es eigentlich der türkischen Regierung und nicht dem Europäischen Parlament , sich der Erhaltung und Bewahrung des ungeheuren Reichtums an Denkmälern vieler Religionen und vieler Kulturen in den Tiefen der Geschichte Konstantinopels anzunehmen. Leider jedoch gehen von der türkischen Regierung Signale des Fanatismus und des Hasses aus , wobei die Äußerungen des Staatsministers über die Umwandlung der Hagia Sophia in eine Moschee vielleicht ein extremes Beispiel sind. Es ist sehr erfreulich , daß die Entschließung über die Religionsfreiheit in Konstantinopel von allen Fraktionen unterstützt wird , es ist äußerst positiv , daß die anderen Fraktionen diesmal unseren Vorschlag akzeptiert haben , die türkische Regierung aufzurufen , den Charakter der Hagia Sophia zu respektieren , und sehr konstruktiv ist meines Erachtens auch der Vorschlag in einem der letzten Absätze der Entschließung
