I would also like , if I may - having myself lost almost as many elections as I have won - to pay a tribute to Mr Perry who has , I know , enjoyed the esteem of the whole House , and his graceful remarks a few moments ago will , I know only serve to enhance his reputation.All our best wishes go to the Professor who I am sure will do this job outstandingly well

We are talking here about the three countries which are outside the euro area. This is in itself worth noting. I want to latch onto that graceful term level of employment . This is one of those euphemisms which conceal the problem that , in this richest part of the world , we have 60 million citizens who are living under the poverty line and more than 20 million unemployed. It is noteworthy and thought - provoking that the countries outside the euro area have higher levels of employment and , if we look outside the European Union , we find a still higher level of employment , namely in our neighbouring country , Norway
Alle drei Länder gehören nicht zur Eurozone. Das allein ist schon bemerkenswert. Ich möchte mich noch etwas näher mit dem reizenden Wort Beschäftigungsgrad befassen. Es gehört zu jenen Euphemismen , mit denen das Problem verdeckt wird , daß in diesem reichsten Teil der Welt 60 Millionen Bürger unterhalb der Armutsgrenze leben und es mehr als 20 Millionen Arbeitslose gibt. Es ist bemerkenswert und stimmt nachdenklich , daß die Länder außerhalb der Eurozone einen höheren Beschäftigungsgrad aufweisen , und schaut man sich außerhalb der Union um , dann entdeckt man einen noch höheren Beschäftigungsgrad , nämlich in unserem Nachbarland Norwegen. Die Hauptursache für dieses Beschäftigungsproblem , für diesen Schandfleck unserer Gesellschaften , ist gesamtwirtschaftlicher Art

But more than just congratulating you , I would like to wish you the best of luck , because you are taking on the presidency of this Parliament after a hard - fought electoral battle with ourselves. Our group did not vote for you , but you are our President and we hope that you will carry out this task in the gentlemanly , impartial and graceful fashion which is typical of you.We also believe that we have played an active role in demonstrating the principle of democracy to all European citizens. Democracy means opposing each other politically while respecting each other and maintaining our common values , and , in this regard , we are at an absolutely crucial moment. Why. Because we have affirmed our common values
