| I can but make an appeal - hinted at in the report's resolution - naturally , the majority view prevailed - that the authorities in the Member States , and all men and women of good will should take into account the implications of the fact that Islam is now clearly the second religion in our societies.However , on the one hand , Mr Chevènement - whom , incidentally , we wish a swift and complete recovery - assures us that couscous is a French dish , and on the other , we see that in Brussels , Muslims sometimes stuff tomatoes with prawns and serve them with chips to break the Ramadan fast.Is all this a sign of cultural impoverishment , a sign of change or of the forging of new identities. In my humble opinion , these are certainly new experiences for Muslims , and changing times and circumstances will subject them to more. It is more likely that we are on the brink of a process of integration in which , understandably , no one wishes their own identity to be unduly neglected.It is therefore reasonable to suppose that we are witnessing the first expressions of European Islam. Perhaps those experts like Olivier Carré who claim that in Europe , Muslims and non - Muslims are moving towards the same practices are not too far off the mark | Einerseits behauptet Chevènement - dem wir übrigens eine schnelle Genesung wünschen - Couscous sei ein französisches Gericht , und andererseits essen die Muslime in Brüssel manchmal mit Garnelen gefüllte Tomaten und Pommes Frites , um das Fasten im Ramadan zu brechen.Handelt es sich hier um ein Zeichen von Kulturverlust , von Umwandlung oder deutet es das Entstehen neuer Identitäten an. Ich erlaube mir festzustellen , daß es sich hier um für die Muslime völlig neue Erlebnisse handelt und daß Zeit und Umstände für weitere sorgen werden. Es ist mehr als wahrscheinlich , daß wir es mit einem Integrationsprojekt zu tun haben , bei dem das eigene Wesen natürlich nicht übermäßig vernachlässigt werden soll.Daher ist es denkbar , daß wir es hier mit den ersten Anzeichen eines europäischen Islams zu tun haben. Vielleicht liegen Experten wie Olivier Carré gar nicht so falsch , wenn sie feststellen , daß sich die Gewohnheiten der Muslime und der NichtMuslime in Europa immer weiter annähern.Verehrte Kolleginnen und Kollegen. Ich wünsche mir , daß Mohammed oder Fatima oder alle anderen Muslime , die uns sowohl in Brüssel als auch hier in Straßburg täglich , in ihre Arbeit vertieft , unseren Kaffee servieren , in unserer aller Augen , in ganz Europa , wieder zu den Männern und Frauen werden , mit denen man sich unterhalten kann |
