Much greater in number were those who felt that relations with the USA were more important. That is to be regretted. The scientific committees have given their expert opinions , and a hearing has also taken place.It would be interesting , however , to know - and this question has still not been answered - why the British Advisory Committee on Novel Foods , which Mr Bowe has already mentioned , was not invited and involved. It was , after all , this committee that expressed , very specifically , the reservation about the possible development of resistance to antibiotics.Nor has it been explained why scientists from the USA were not invited. They would not only have been able to confirm what Mrs Roth - Behrendt has told us , namely that the genetically modified maize is not permitted in all US Federal States , and specifically not in those where genetically modified cotton is already permitted , but they would also have been able to tell us that the IPE has also prohibited the use of genetically modified maize for the production of popcorn and sweetcorn

Die wissenschaftlichen Ausschüsse haben ihre Expertisen abgegeben , und es hat auch ein Hearing stattgefunden.Es wäre aber interessant zu wissen - und diese Fragen bleiben offen - , warum der advisory committee on novel foods aus Großbritannien , den schon Kollegen Bowe erwähnt hat , nicht eingeladen und eingebunden wurde. Genau dieses Gremium hat ja die Bedenken bezüglich einer Resistenz , die gegen Antibiotika entwickelt werden könnte , sehr genau formuliert.Es ist auch nicht geklärt , warum nicht aus den USA Wissenschaftler eingeladen wurden , die nicht nur das , was Kollegin Roth - Behrendt schon gesagt hat , hätten bestätigen können , nämlich daß BT - Mais nicht in allen Bundesstaaten zugelassen ist , genau in denen nicht , wo bereits BT - Baumwolle zugelassen ist , sondern auch , daß IPE auch verboten hat , daß BT - Mais zur Produktion von Popkorn und Gemüsemais verwendet wird. Was bedeutet denn das für die europäische Landwirtschaft , für den europäischen Konsumenten , wenn nur sehr unvollständige Informationen von der Kommission kommen
Mr President , Commissioner , a lot of things have been said , so let me first of all ask a question. In my opinion , it makes absolutely no sense at all , on the one hand to prohibit the production of GMOs in the EU , and on the other hand to import products made from genetically modified maize , such as popcorn , into the EU , in certain circumstances - and that is my question to you , Mrs Bjerregaard - because to do so is to render meaningless the votes of those countries who are totally against these products , and as far as the consumers are concerned it is just a load of eyewash.It has not yet proved possible to kindle a deeper public understanding of green genetic engineering , in other words the development and breeding of genetically modified plants. PR campaigns are not enough to bring about a better understanding. Science and the economy need to make themselves more understandable. This means taking into account the questions and concerns of the average consumer , the man in the street. The possible risks of green genetic engineering have been overestimated , in my country for example , according to the opinion of the Technology Council. The risk of undesirable developments arising from the breeding of herbicide - resistant plants is less than in conventional breeding , because only one gene is being transferred , under controlled conditions , rather than a large number of different genes
Herr Präsident , Frau Kommissarin. Es wurde vieles gesagt ; lassen Sie mich deshalb vorab einmal eine Frage stellen. Es macht aus meiner Sicht überhaupt keinen Sinn , wenn wir die Produktion von GMO in der EU auf der einen Seite verbieten , auf der anderen Seite aber unter Umständen , und das ist meine Frage auch an Sie , Frau Bjerregaard , Genmaisprodukte , Popcorn etc. in die EU eingeführt werden. Dann hat auch das große Votum der Länder , die total gegen diese Produkte sind , keinen Sinn. Dann ist es für die Verbraucher reine Augenwischerei.Es ist nämlich bisher nicht gelungen , ein tieferes Verständnis in der Bevölkerung für die grüne Gentechnik , also die Entwicklung und Züchtung gentechnisch veränderter Pflanzen zu wecken. Für ein besseres Verständnis genügen keine PR - Aktionen. Vielmehr müssen Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft sich selber verständlich machen. Dabei müssen die Fragen und Sorgen von Otto Normalverbraucher berücksichtigt werden. Die möglichen Risiken der grünen Gentechnik werden laut Aussage des Technologierates z.B. in meinem Land überschätzt. Die Gefahr unerwünschter Entwicklungen ist bei der Züchtung herbizidresistenter Pflanzen geringer als in der konventionellen Züchtung , weil nur jeweils ein Gen kontrolliert übertragen wird statt einer großen Zahl verschiedener Gene. Man macht es aber den Befürwortern eines vorurteilsfreien Umgangs mit der Gentechnologie nicht gerade leicht , wenn die neuen Möglichkeiten der Züchtung z.B. genutzt werden , um Pflanzen an ein Pflanzenschutzmittel anzupassen und nicht umgekehrt
