Mr President , Zimbabwe really had all the qualifications for becoming a prosperous and successful country in southern Africa. That is why it is so incredibly tragic to see it heading straight for the abyss. Zimbabwe has been discussed by us many times in this House , as I know it has also been in the other institutions. We have often thought we have seen some small glimpse of hope or gleam of light. We have been wrong every time
Herr Präsident , Simbabwe hatte eigentlich alle Voraussetzungen , sich zu einem blühenden und erfolgreichen Staat im südlichen Afrika zu entwickeln. Aus diesem Grunde ist es überaus tragisch , dass das Land geradewegs auf den Abgrund zusteuert. Wir haben Simbabwe im Europäischen Parlament wiederholt behandelt , und mir ist bekannt , dass dies auch für die anderen Institutionen der Europäischen Union zutrifft. Oftmals glaubten wir , einen kleinen Schimmer Hoffnung , einen Hauch von Verbesserung zu sehen , doch wir wurden jedes Mal enttäuscht , denn dem ist nicht so
We call upon the Council and the Commission , as a matter of urgency , to display all necessary firmness in finally putting an end to this crisis.In this gloomy climate , let me offer a gleam of hope. My words are addressed to you , Mr President - in - Office. Your European commitment , your determination to make a success of the single currency , your concern to solve the problem of unemployment and the social problems , your desire to strengthen cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe on a pragmatic , effective basis - all these things give us encouragement , and we thank you for them. We wish you every success , and not only in the areas I have just mentioned

Wir wünschen Ihnen Erfolg , aber nicht nur in den Bereichen , die ich soeben genannt habe. Wir müssen mit Politiken zur Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen und zur Förderung des sozialen Zusammenhalts , verbunden mit einer Harmonisierung auf steuerrechtlichem Gebiet , auf die gemeinsame Währung zusteuern
