There is a growing tide of nationalism in Russia , as we have heard , and growing disenchantment with the perceived failure of Western - inspired reform and values. The success of Alexander Lebed , which has already been referred to , in the presidential elections last summer where he came third , with 11 million votes , was an indication of this political trend. The fact that a man who admires General Pinochet , called Mormons scum and filth , promised to shoot criminals and describes himself as a semi - democrat is regarded as a moderate nationalist in the Russian political firmament , shows the worrying drift of politics in Russia
Wie wir hörten , gibt es in Rußland heute eine zunehmende nationalistische Tendenz , und es wird mit zunehmender Enttäuschung und Ernüchterung festgestellt , daß westliche Werte und Grundsätze und an westliche Modelle angelehnte Reformen gescheitert sind. Der heute bereits erwähnte Erfolg von Alexander Lebed bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen im Sommer dieses Jahres , bei denen er mit elf Millionen Stimmen im ersten Wahlgang Dritter wurde , war ein Zeichen für diesen politischen Trend. Die Tatsache , daß ein Mann , der General Pinochet bewundert , der die Mormonen als Dreck und Abschaum bezeichnete , der verhieß , Straftäter zu erschießen , und der sich selbst als halber Demokrat bezeichnet , als ein gemäßigter Nationalist am russischen politischen Firmament betrachtet wird , zeigt in welche beunruhigende Richtung die Politik in Rußland tendiert
Mr President , I am addressing the House on behalf of Mrs Soltwedel - Schäfer , who is unfortunately unable to attend. When we look at this document we can only say that it is the opposite of what is desirable - a flexibility derived from principles. What happens here is that the principles are formulated first - as Mr Van Velzen has just pointed out - and then the opposite course is pursued. Above a firmament of bright ideas and good intentions we then have a substructure , a basis of practically oriented historical materialism of the cynical variety , and the only thing left to politicians is to push ahead with adapting man to the new technology
Herr Präsident , ich spreche hier für die Kollegin Soltwedel - Schäfer , die leider verhindert ist. Wenn wir uns das Dokument ansehen , müssen wir sagen , das ist das Gegenteil vom Wünschenswerten , nämlich eine von Prinzipien geleitete Flexibilität. Hier werden erst Prinzipien formuliert - Herr van Velzen hat gerade darauf hingewiesen - und dann wird das Gegenteil praktiziert. Über einem Ideenhimmel gibt es dann einen Unterbau , eine Basis eines praktisch gewendeten historischen Materialismus in seiner zynischen Variante , und das einzige , was der Politik bleibt , ist , die Anpassung des Menschen an die neue Technologie zu betreiben
