I am delighted that the Commissioner says that there is to be an evaluation and that it will cover not only implementation but also the results of the counter - terrorism policy and the impact on fundamental rights , as this is long overdue.It is interesting that , if you criticise or ask critical questions about the counter - terrorism policy , you often find yourself described as anti - American. Yet it is actually the Americans who are asking the critical questions and who have carried out comprehensive evaluations in recent months and are putting big question marks on the effectiveness of these measures. Therefore , instead of playing copycat and adopting bad US policy , Europe must adopt good policy and join with the US to consider what is necessary and what is not
Über die Aussage des Kommissars , wonach nicht nur die Umsetzung , sondern auch die Ergebnisse der Strategie zur Terrorismusbekämpfung und die Auswirkungen auf die Grundrechte bewertet werden sollen , bin ich außerordentlich erfreut , denn das ist längst überfällig.Wer an der Politik zur Terrorismusbekämpfung Kritik übt oder sie kritisch hinterfragt , wird häufig als antiamerikanisch bezeichnet. Es sind aber gerade die Amerikaner , die kritische Fragen stellen und die in den vergangenen Monaten umfassende Bewertungen vorgenommen sowie die Wirksamkeit der getroffenen Maßnahmen mit Fragezeichen versehen haben. Europa sollte daher nicht gleichsam mit blindem Gehorsam eine unbefriedigende US - Politik übernehmen , sondern vielmehr eine konstruktive Politik betreiben und in Zusammenarbeit mit den Amerikanern prüfen , was notwendig ist und was nicht. The crimes of Hitler’s Nazis and of Stalinism cannot and must not be forgotten , particularly this year , when 14 June will mark the passing of 65 years since the start of the ruthless mass deportations from the Baltic states. Thank you , Christopher Beazley , for reminding us of these facts.Today we should foster among Europe’s peoples understanding of the principles of respect for democracy , freedom and human rights. We should do this so that no contemporary copycat Stalin could ever even dream that he would go unpunished.We must actively support projects that preserve the memory of Nazism and Stalinism , mass deportations and the dead. We must show our children the places connected with mass deportations and concentration camps and we must preserve the memories of the victims.I call upon you to vote for a reunification of Europe’s history. As far as I am aware , that is something that has never happened in this House in my 16 years here
