Madam President , ‘no added sugar’ , ‘high in iron’ , ‘low in cholesterol’ or else a current bestseller , ‘high in omega3s’ , health claims nowadays adorn almost all packaging , and quite naturally influence our choices as consumers. We therefore need to guide the consumer through this veritable jungle , and that is the aim of this excellent proposal for a regulation : first to ensure that the claims are accurate , as a minimum , and then to put an end to those that cause misunderstandings.I will return to my example : high in omega3s. In principle , this is very good , but obviously not for products too high in fat , sugar or salt

Mr President , the most salient feature of the Annual Economic Report is the Commission's self - satisfaction in assessing the economic situation in the Union.The result of that is a passivity which entrusts all economic certainty to the maintenance of a few healthy balances or macro - economic fundamentals , public finance and inflation in particular , as if this were enough to ensure growth and the creation of jobs.The evidence from the various economies does not confirm this analysis. The macro - economic fundamentals are improving , nominal convergence is progressing , but the hiatus in growth is persisting and unemployment remains at intolerable levels. As the only explanation , the Commission continues to rely on the vague concept of lack of confidence. And yet citizens are experiencing day by day the economic horror which provided the recent title for a famous French bestseller.As far as we are concerned , the economic situation in the Union exhibits significant deficiencies in crucial aspects which need to be stressed
Herr Präsident , die wohl hervorstechendste Eigenschaft des Jahreswirtschaftsberichts ist die Selbstgefälligkeit , mit der die Kommission die wirtschaftliche Lage der Union beurteilt.Daraus ergibt sich eine Passivität , die alle wirtschaftliche Sicherheit dem Erhalt einiger makroökonomischer Gleichgewichte oder Grundlagen überträgt , insbesondere bei Staatsfinanzen und Inflation , als ob dies ausreichte , um Wachstum zu sichern und Arbeitsplätze zu schaffen.Die Realität unserer Volkswirtschaften bestätigt diese Sicht der Dinge nicht. Die makroökonomischen Grundlagen bessern sich , nominell macht auch die Konvergenz Fortschritte , doch gelingt es nicht , die Wachstumspause zu beenden und die Arbeitslosigkeit zu beseitigen , die nach wie vor einen unhaltbar hohen Stand hat. Als einzige Erklärung führt die Kommission auch weiterhin einen recht diffusen Vertrauensmangel an. Der Bürger in unseren Ländern erlebt diese Situation jedoch als ein wirtschaftliches Horrorgemälde , wie es im Titel eines vor kurzem erschienenen französischen Bestseller heißt.Unsererseits müssen wir darauf hinweisen , daß die wirtschaftliche Situation in der Union in einigen ganz wesentlichen Aspekten erhebliche Mängel aufweist
