Mr President , the reports and the debate that has been going on for so long have provided a sampling of the many serious problems that Community urban space is suffering from. It is clear that there are more problems , and the outlook is that they will get worse and they will multiply. What is noteworthy and surprising in this. That nowhere does anyone name the main causes or those guilty of causing this situation , namely the jungle of the laws of multinational interests and unbridled competition , which has run amok in the pursuit of profit in the context of the arrant free market
Die Berichte und auch die Aussprache , die nun schon seit geraumer Zeit geführt wird , haben einen Eindruck von den vielen und akuten Problemen vermittelt , unter denen die Städte in der Gemeinschaft leiden. Es ist offensichtlich , daß es noch mehr Probleme gibt , und in der Perspektive werden sie sich sowohl verschärfen als auch noch weiter zunehmen. Was ist nun bemerkenswert , was ist so provozierend. Daß nirgends jemand die Hauptursachen , die Schuldigen an dieser Situation beim Namen nennt , nämlich den Dschungel der Gesetze der multinationalen Interessen und den zügellosen Konkurrenzkampf , der auf der Jagd nach Profit im Rahmen des berüchtigten freien Marktes in einen Amoklauf mündet
We all know that the violence in Indonesia has not been confined to East Timor , although , as is perfectly right and proper , this region has received most of the attention of late. We are also very much in favour of talking about the Moluccas. The violence being meted out there has cost many people their lives and the Indonesian authorities have failed to take adequate action against this. By disturbing the balance of Moluccan society Jakarta has , in fact , contributed to the increase in violence. The authorities do not appear to want to get a grip on the continuing polarisation between Christians and Muslims. There too , as we see , armed militias run amok without let or hindrance.We want this situation to change and we demand that the Indonesian Government put an end to the violence. We also demand that it create a situation in which we too are able , from within the European Union , to lend appropriate assistance with repairing the damage and providing the people with the humanitarian aid they need
Wir möchten ebenso über die Lage auf den Molukken sprechen. Die Gewalttaten haben dort zahlreiche Menschenleben gefordert , und die indonesischen Behörden haben wenig dagegen unternommen. Jakarta hat das Gleichgewicht in der molukkischen Gesellschaft verschoben und damit sogar zur Eskalation der Gewalt beigetragen. Die fortschreitende Polarisierung zwischen Christen und Muslimen scheinen die Behörden nicht in den Griff bekommen zu wollen. Auch dort stellt sich den bewaffneten Milizen , wie wir feststellen müssen , niemand in den Weg.Diese Situation muß sich ändern , und deshalb fordern wir die indonesische Regierung auf , die Gewalt zu stoppen und dafür zu sorgen , daß es auch uns als Europäische Union möglich ist , einen angemessenen Beitrag zur Behebung der Schäden zu leisten und den Menschen die benötigte humanitäre Hilfe zuteil werden zu lassen.Indonesien wird nur dann überleben , wenn es eine Lösung für die sich über mehrere Inseln ausbreitende Gewalt findet , wenn die Minderheiten in einer demokratischen Struktur geachtet werden und wenn es Raum für regionale Autonomie gibt. Indonesien muß dazu einen Anstoß bekommen

Nowhere does anybody name the main causes , those guilty of this situation , that is , the jungle of the law of multinational interests and unbridled competition , which has run amok , in the pursuit of profit in the context of the arrant free market.We run the risk of being regarded as hypocrites and accomplices in the cover - up of illegal interests , or , of it is not the one or the other , we run the risk of being regarded as political and parliamentary masochists , continually bemoaning the problems , not naming the causes , and consequently not confronting the problems in order to find a solution.Let this Parliament at last rise above these syndromes and let it show that it truly represents the tormented people in the urban centres of the European Union. The new Objective 2 covers a different set of issues
Herr Präsident , zu Beginn möchte ich Frau Napoletano zur Ihrem sehr gelungenen Bericht gratulieren. Besonders froh bin ich darüber , daß in dem Bericht sehr stark die Bedeutung der Möglichkeiten der eigenen Einflußnahme durch die Bewohner in die Stadtpolitik hervorgehoben worden ist. Die Städte können nur vollständig entwickelt werden , wenn die Bewohner selbst die Gelegenheit bekommen die sie betreffenden Entscheidungen zu beeinflussen. Deshalb sollten auch verschiedene Formen der bürgernahen und kommunalpolitischen Demokratie untersucht und entwickelt werden , und die Bürger sollten mehr Möglichkeiten zur Erlangung von Informationen und zur Beteiligung erhalten , z. B. durch die Nutzung der neuen Technologien.Sehr herzlich unterstützen wir die im Bericht aufgestellte Forderung , die Frauen bei der Entwicklung der Städte zu berücksichtigen
