I think the most significant achievement of Solidarność was its ability to unite all sectors of society. It was not possible without a moral revival , without the spiritual dimension of which a Polish pope became the embodiment , reminder and inspiration

Many fought for freedom , doing so each independently and in different ways , but there was no combined force uniting all Poles around the same idea. Only when a Polish pope was installed in the Vatican did the Poles realise that they were united by their spiritual inheritance and that there were forces that would take them forward to independence and autonomy. Damals konnte ich nicht verstehen , dass jemand wirklich glauben konnte , der Kommunismus könne gestürzt werden. Als die Menschen in Serbien dann fast zwei Jahrzehnte später gegen das Milosevic - Regime protestierten , hatten sie etwas von der Solidarność gelernt. Sie hatten gelernt , dass totalitäre Regimes nicht für immer existieren , sondern tatsächlich gestürzt werden können
