Mr President , in our memories Kampuchea will always remain the country of the Killing Fields . The period of terror still casts a shadow over the country

Mr President , Commissioner , it is clear that the political situation in Kampuchea is calmer at this moment than it has ever been and it is equally clear that the country is still a long way from being a real democracy
Herr Präsident , Herr Kommissar. Klar ist , dass die politische Situation in Kambodscha zurzeit ruhiger ist als je zuvor , aber ebenso deutlich ist , dass in diesem Land noch lange nicht von einer echten Demokratie gesprochen werden kann
I am far from being so enthusiastic. We must watch that National Election Committee very closely , since it is at the crux of whether or not the elections are being conducted fairly. The European Union has little cause to be proud of the way in which we observed the elections in Kampuchea last time , and we must do a lot better this time
Die Arbeit dieses Nationalen Wahlkomitees müssen wir aufmerksam verfolgen , denn dort stellt sich natürlich die zentrale Frage , ob die Wahlen ehrlich verlaufen oder nicht. Die Europäische Union hat wenig Grund , stolz auf die Art und Weise zu sein , wie die Wahlen in Kambodscha beim letzten Mal beobachtet wurden und muss diese Aufgabe dieses Mal ein Stück besser machen. Es reicht nicht , wohlklingende Prinzipien in einer Vereinbarung festzulegen
