The Lord Mayor of Leicester , Councillor John Allen and the Lady Mayoress , Mrs Allan , are in the public gallery. This twinning is an important political and social union and I very much hope you will welcome the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress here in Strasbourg

I now see that even within the European Commission itself , the head of the Bureau of European Policy Advisers , Mr Sidjanski , also speaks for the Latsis Foundation. Thank goodness for .We also learned that Mr Mandelson enjoyed a holiday with the lobbyist Peter Brown , and that he also went on a luxury yacht owned by the Microsoft cofounder , Paul Allen.Last November , at President Barroso’s inauguration , I asked of this Commission : ‘Would you buy a used car from them.’. I suppose I should have said ‘a luxury yacht’. What fairminded person could think that the Commission should police itself in this regard. I have not accused Mr Barroso or any of the Commissioners of any wrongdoing , but it is a case of Caesar’s wife ; it is a case that you have to be seen to be above suspicion.However , Mr Barroso’s reaction was one of denial. He stated in his letter – when it finally arrived – that ‘hospitality is a normal fact of private life’. He obviously has a better circle of friends than me , but no matter. Was the relationship with Mr Latsis really purely personal. Was there really no conflict of interests. If that is the case , perhaps Mr Barroso could tell me why he resigned the maritime portfolio shortly thereafter
Darüber hinaus wurde erst letzte Woche ein Unternehmen von Spiro Latsis – die Autobahngruppe Ägäis – auf eine Auswahlliste von Unternehmen für das profitable Autobahnprojekt Athen - Thessaloniki gesetzt. Offenbar hat die Latsis - Stiftung jetzt sogar innerhalb der Europäischen Kommission einen Fürsprecher , nämlich den Leiter des Büros der Berater für europäische Politik , Herrn Sidjanski.Gott sei Dank gibt es .Überdies haben wir erfahren , dass Herr Mandelson mit dem Lobbyisten Peter Brown Urlaub gemacht hat und außerdem auf einer Luxusyacht des Mitbegründers von Microsoft , Paul Allen , weilte.Im November letzten Jahres stellte ich bei der Amtseinführung von Präsident Barroso dieser Kommission die Frage : „Würden Sie von ihnen einen Gebrauchtwagen kaufen.“ Ich hätte wohl lieber sagen sollen „eine Luxusyacht“. Kein vernünftig denkender Mensch würde erwarten , dass sich die Kommission in dieser Hinsicht selbst kontrolliert. Ich habe weder Herrn Barroso noch irgendein anderes Mitglied der Kommission eines Vergehens beschuldigt. Aber es geht hier darum , nicht nur korrekt zu handeln , sondern dies auch nach außen hin zu vertreten.Herr Barroso reagierte jedoch mit Ablehnung. Er erklärte in seinem Schreiben – als es endlich ankam – , dass Einladungen ein normaler Bestandteil des Privatlebens seien. Offenbar hat er einen gehobeneren Freundeskreis als ich , aber das tut ja nichts zur Sache. Unterhielt er wirklich rein persönliche Beziehungen zu Herrn Latsis. Gab es wirklich keinen Interessenkonflikt
