For example many of you have mentioned the question of energy security - which is important - and the question of the consequences of climate change in all its dimensions , the question of how to tackle the responsibility that we have with disasters that are natural and not manmade , for which we have resources and capabilities that have been put in place to combat such dramatic events.Concerning proliferation : I have spoken about that on almost every occasion I have been given the opportunity - the risks and the importance that issue has for all of us. I think if we were to pick two horizontal issues we have to tackle , one would be climate change and the other would be proliferation and disarmament. Those are the two main issues that may put at risk much of what we value in life. Therefore , I agree with that.I would like to say a few words to my dear friend , Brian Crowley. I think the important thing is to deliver , and I agree with him. However , take the example of Chad. I do not know whether that was the best example you could have chosen. I was in Chad a couple of weeks ago. I went to the capital , to the second city and to Goz Beida , where the Irish Battalion is deployed with very high spirits and enormous professionalism. That is something that should make us proud. I feel proud of the work the Irish Battalion is doing in the middle of the savannah , trying to help the displaced people in the refugee camps , with tremendous generosity. I applaud the Irish soldiers who are there , who have a very generous attitude and are fully determined to make things better on the ground , which is the objective of the mission
Zur Proliferation : Ich habe das bei fast jeder sich bietenden Gelegenheit angesprochen - die Risiken und die Bedeutung , die dieses Thema für uns alle hat. Ich denke , wenn wir zwei horizontale Themen zur Bearbeitung auswählen müssten , so wären dies zum einen der Klimawandel und zum anderen Proliferation und Abrüstung. Das sind die beiden wichtigsten Themen , die vieles von dem , was wir im Leben schätzen , gefährden können. Deshalb stimme ich hier zu.Ich möchte noch ein paar kurze Bemerkungen an meinen lieben Freund Brian Crowley richten. Es geht meines Erachtens um die Erreichung von Zielen , und ich stimme ihm zu. Aber nehmen wir das Beispiel Tschad. Ich weiß nicht , ob Sie damit das beste Beispiel ausgewählt haben. Ich bin vor einigen Wochen im Tschad gewesen. Ich habe die Hauptstadt , die zweitgrößte Stadt und Goz Beida besucht , wo das irische Bataillon stationiert ist , bei sehr guter Stimmung und mit enormer Professionalität. Darauf können wir stolz sein. Die Arbeit , die das irische Bataillon mitten in der Savanne leistet , erfüllt mich mit Stolz. Wie sie mit großer Hingabe bemüht sind , den Vertriebenen in den Flüchtlingslagern zu helfen. Mein Beifall gilt den irischen Soldaten vor Ort , die eine sehr engagierte Haltung an den Tag legen und fest entschlossen sind , die Lage zu verbessern , was das Ziel ihrer Mission ist.Mein Dank gilt Ihnen , Herr Präsident , und allen Fraktionen des Parlaments. Ich hoffe sehr , dass es uns bis Ende 2008 gelingen wird , konstruktiv daran zu arbeiten , den Traum so vieler Bürger der Europäischen Union wahr werden zu lassen - die Umsetzung des Vertrags , um ein Europa zu haben , das in der internationalen Gemeinschaft , in der Welt , eine unseren Ideen , Prinzipien und Fähigkeiten und unserem Lebensstandard angemessene Stellung einnimmt.
