You see , Mr President , it is important for the history of the creation of this united Europe , begun more than 50 years ago , to become part of the common memory of the peoples represented in Parliament today : we should retrace and go back over this history in terms of the dates and milestones which characterised it and in terms of its protagonists

I would merely like to retrace our steps in this debate for a moment to , when talking about petitions and the gargantuan ventures brought about by globalisation , I made an analogy : the citizen and the giant. There is an enormous discrepancy between the citizen and the giant. Parliament should now ask itself what it can to do protect citizen's rights.This is a situation - as Mr Perry has made very clear by mentioning a case in point - which affects many citizens who have gone bankrupt. There are a large number of trials under way in the United States and some in Europe too with many in the United Kingdom. How can we not wonder what the solution to this situation is and how it will develop
Ich möchte lediglich die Diskussion noch einmal auf das zurücklenken , was ich vorhin gesagt habe , als ich von den Petitionen und den gewaltigen , durch die Globalisierung ausgelösten Vorhaben sprach , und als ich das symbolhafte Beispiel des Bürgers im Vergleich zum Riesen anführte. Es besteht eine ungeheure Diskrepanz zwischen dem Bürger und dem Riesen. Deshalb muss sich das Europäische Parlament fragen , was es tun kann , um die Rechte der Bürger zu schützen.Eine solche Situation - wie Herr Perry eindeutig durch ein Beispiel zeigte - betrifft viele Bürger , die Konkurs anmelden mussten. Mr President , the Annual Economic Report for 1998 should have been an opportunity to evaluate the roads we have travelled along and to correct strategies and policies. Those opportunities have been missed , because the road to the euro has acquired such real and symbolic significance that it has dented , if not destroyed , our ability to evaluate , and , a fortiori , to correct and retrace our steps.The Gasòliba report adopts the stance that has virtually become dogma , namely that the euro and the Stability Pact are essential tools for growth and job creation , and that the obstacles preventing these tools from doing their work are non - labour costs , lack of adaptability on the part of workers , and over - regulation. If we could dispose of those obstacles , uncouple the ECB from the economic situation and co - ordinate economic policies under the iron collar of the budget , we would be in euro - Eldorado .That is not the way we see it. We are worried about the emphasis placed on wage differentiation in this scenario , in the way it is in the United States. There is a clear tendency for gaps to widen - and the American model would accelerate that tendency. That is why we are pleased to note that the rapporteur considers the American case too extreme to be used as a model. We also want to draw attention to our amendments : a tax on speculative capital profits , a reduction in working hours without loss of pay and an evaluation of how the development of EMU will affect unemployment. But it is also true , thankfully , that the situation is improving elsewhere within the Union
Herr Präsident. Es geht nicht nur um Wirtschaftswachstum , sondern um Wirtschaftswachstum mit Sinn und Verstand. Eine europäische Wirtschaftspolitik heißt sozialökologische Marktwirtschaft. Dazu gehört nicht nur die schnelle Einführung der Energiesteuer , und ich bin da Herrn Monti für seine energische Umsetzung sehr dankbar , sondern dazu gehören eine Sozial - und Umweltsituation und damit auch eine Union. Was hat der Jahresbericht mit den entschreckenden Prozenten einer rechten Partei in Deutschland zu tun. Sehr , sehr viel. Arbeitslosigkeit und Jugendarbeitslosigkeit schaffen Hilflosigkeit , und die rechten Parteien nicht nur in Deutschland , sondern in ganz Europa profitieren davon.Am 2. Mai werden wir hier im Europäischen Parlament die historische Situation der Schaffung einer gemeinsamen europäischen Währung begründen und auch feiern. Das ist gut so , und ich bin darüber sehr froh. Abschließend möchte ich sagen : Ich bin deshalb froh , weil wir sie dann haben als historische Tatsache , und weil auch die ganze Unkerei gegen die Währungsunion , die für uns in zehn Jahren selbstverständlich sein wird , die ganze Unkerei auch in meiner Fraktion endlich ein Ende hat
