Mr President , it seems to me that this joint debate tonight is perhaps a fitting finale to the work of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market in this mandate. At the beginning of the mandate we also thought that with the advent of the euro and e - commerce these would deliver a double boost to Europe's economy and the internal market
– Herr Präsident , ich habe den Eindruck , dass die gemeinsame Aussprache des heutigen Abends womöglich ein passender Abschluss für die Arbeit des Ausschusses für Recht und Binnenmarkt innerhalb dieser Amtszeit ist. Zu Beginn der Amtszeit waren wir ebenfalls der Auffassung , dass von der Einführung des Euro und des elektronischen Geschäftsverkehrs ein doppelter Impuls für die europäische Wirtschaft und den Binnenmarkt ausgehen würde
I believe that we are working in the right direction , and I hope that the declarations of the European Council in Laeken , which has been a good finale to a brilliant Presidency , can quickly be turned into concrete actions which , as I said at the beginning , will allow the European Union to make significant progress in its project of political consolidation

Mr President , Commissioner , we very nearly did not have this debate with you , but with your successor. In all honesty , I am really pleased that it is you we can talk to today about the EU’s climate policy and its contribution to the climate conference in Buenos Aires in December. It strikes me as a nice finale that you can pass on this climate dossier in the knowledge that the Kyoto Protocol will enter into effect shortly , now that the Russian State Duma and the Russian Federation Council have ratified it , which they did on 22 and 27 October respectively

Ich halte es für einen wunderbaren Abschluss , dass Sie dieses Klimadossier in dem Wissen übergeben können , dass das Kyoto - Protokoll jetzt , da es von der Russischen Staatsduma am 22. Oktober und vom russischen Föderationsrat am 27. Oktober ratifiziert worden ist , in Kürze in Kraft treten wird
