Madam President , Commissioner , ladies and gentlemen , when the Swedish golf star , Annika Sörenstam , wanted to compete with the men in the American professional tournament , the male golf world got the jitters. A number of male golfers reacted with suspicion and antipathy , and others rejected the idea outright. The men wondered what was to happen now. Perhaps she was better than some of them. The reaction encountered by Annika Sörenstam when she wanted to measure her ability against the men is symptomatic of many men's attitudes to women and sport. Not that I believe that men in general actively conspire against women in sport , although there are some who do so. What is done through thoughtlessness and prejudice has the same effect , however

Als die schwedische Golfspielerin Annika Sörenstam bei der amerikanischen Profitour gegen die männliche Konkurrenz antreten wollte , erschütterte dies die männliche Golfwelt. Einige reagierten mit Misstrauen und Feindseligkeit , andere distanzierten sich deutlich. Die Männer fragten sich wohl , wohin so etwas führen würde. Womöglich wäre sie auch noch besser als einige von ihnen. Die Reaktion , mit der sich Annika Sörenstam konfrontiert sah , als sie sich mit den Männern messen wollte , ist symptomatisch für die Einstellung vieler Männer zu Frauen und Sport. Ich meine nicht , dass Männer im allgemeinen Frauen beim Sport aktiv behindern , obwohl es welche gibt , die auch das tun. Ein durch Unbedachtsamkeit und Vorurteile bestimmtes Agieren hat jedoch genau diesen Effekt
Commissioner , you have heard today a message that will surely get through to the cosmetics industry and the Member States too : we will be very vigilant as regards how the timetable is kept to , and that this time there really will be the cut - off point of which Mr Florenz and others spoke earlier. I would rather not hear anything further said on this subject in this House. My wish is that there should now be a timetable , one that might even now be complied with even more promptly , and that that should draw a line under the subject.Please let me conclude by again saying thank you - that is why I wanted to say a final word. Wir haben gute Mitarbeiter hier im Parlament , manche sind noch besser , und das Sekretariat des Vermittlungsausschusses , das heute dort sitzt , hat sicherlich die meiste Arbeit gehabt , sehr viel mehr als ich selbst.Ganz zum Schluss sage ich Dank an die Mitarbeiterin meiner Fraktion , die mir in den letzten Jahren die Beratung gegeben hat , die ich gebraucht habe , als Obfrau und als Berichterstatterin , ohne die ich nie irgend einen Fuß auf die Erde bekommen hätte , die heute zum letzten Mal hier sitzt , weil sie eine andere Aufgabe übernimmt.
