However , the Commission is of course aware that high concentrations of technetium 99 have been found along the coastlines of the Scandinavian countries and in the Arctic Sea. The Commission took an active part in the Council of Ministers meeting held in Sintra in July 1998. At that meeting , at which I was also present , the question of radioactive discharges was raised and a reduction in principle of the volume of waste was adopted with a view to reaching a concentration close to zero - and now we are looking a long way ahead - by the year 2020. The UK Government has given assurances that it is acutely aware of the problem with technetium 99 , not least in connection with the handling of Sellafield's discharge licences. Against that background , I think I can say that we are of course monitoring developments very actively and that we also have the necessary contacts , but that we must of course have it incorporated into our work schedule and take into account the number of people available if we are to carry out inspections
Die Kommission hat sich aktiv an der Ministerkonferenz in Sintra im Juli 1998 beteiligt. Bei dieser Gelegenheit - ich war übrigens selbst anwesend - wurde auch das Problem des Austritts radioaktiver Substanzen angesprochen , und es wurde eine prinzipielle Verringerung der Abfallmenge beschlossen , wobei die Konzentration im Jahr 2020 - wir reden hier über die künftige Entwicklung - bei Null liegen sollte. Wie die britische Regierung versicherte , ist ihr das Problem mit Technetium 99 sehr gegenwärtig , insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit den entsprechenden Genehmigungen für Sellafield. Daher kann ich behaupten , daß wir die Entwicklung aktiv verfolgen und auch über die notwendigen Kontakte verfügen. Wenn wir Kontrolluntersuchungen durchführen , müssen wir uns andererseits an unser Arbeitsprogramm halten und berücksichtigen , daß uns nur eine begrenzte Anzahl von Mitarbeitern zur Verfügung steht
