I am sure many of us would like things to be the other way around and the situation in Burma to be such that we were not required to adopt a resolution of any kind.In Burma the army is pacifying regions inhabited by ethnic minorities. The army regularly arrests opposition activists and it harasses ordinary citizens protesting against price increases and the further reduction of what is already a horrifyingly low standard of living

Copyright compensates the author without calling these principles into question. When individuals use materials or harness natural forces , the costs change , the remuneration required is much higher , and patents make such remuneration possible by prohibiting the unremunerated use of the invention. A piece of software is nothing more than a collection of mathematical formulae ; the creation of new software can use hundreds of pieces of existing software. Prohibiting or slowing down this creative development would constitute an attack on the dissemination of knowledge and nevertheless , in future , human knowledge will increasingly take the form of software

Die notwendige Voraussetzung dafür bestand darin , dass die Produkte des menschlichen Wissens , seien sie musikalischer , mathematischer oder anderer Natur , frei und kostenlos zugänglich sind. Das Urheberrecht sichert dem Urheber eine angemessene Vergütung , ohne diese Grundsätze in Frage zu stellen. Wenn der Mensch Werkstoffe einsetzt oder Naturkräfte nutzt , dann ändern sich die Kosten und die erforderliche Vergütung steigt an. Das Patent ermöglicht eine solche Vergütung , indem es die Nutzung der Erfindung ohne Gebührenzahlung verbietet. Eine Software ist nur eine Zusammenstellung von mathematischen Formeln , und zur Erarbeitung einer neuen Software werden zuweilen mehrere Hundert bestehende Programme verwendet. Wollte man diese vielfältige Entwicklung verbieten oder verlangsamen , so bedeutete dies eine Beeinträchtigung der Verbreitung des Wissens. Doch das menschliche Wissen wird künftig immer mehr in der Form von Software auftreten
