– Mr President , the real cause of the huge problem of doping in sport is the commercialisation of sport through the capitalist method of production , the objective of which is to increase the profits of the monopoly business groups ; the acceptance , in other words , that an athlete may be professional and that there can therefore be professional athleticism

Today I revert to a matter which concerns all of us , the matter of doping , that scourge of athleticism which , of course , concerns young people the world over. That is why I would propose that a resolution against doping be passed on the basis of the amendment we intend to table , setting out the measures which the European Union and all of us need to take in order to combat this scourge
Heute bringe ich erneut ein Thema zur Sprache , das uns alle beschäftigt , das Thema Doping , diese Geißel des Sports , von der – darüber bestehen sicherlich keine Zweifel – junge Menschen auf der ganzen Welt betroffen sind. Deshalb möchte ich vorschlagen , auf der Grundlage des Änderungsantrags , den wir einzureichen beabsichtigen , eine Entschließung gegen das Doping zu verabschieden , die die Maßnahmen benennt , die von der Europäischen Union sowie von uns allen ergriffen werden müssen , um diese Geißel zu bekämpfen
It is worth noting that we had 22 incidents of athletes who tested positive during doping controls at the Athens Olympics , which was twice the number at Sidney.Today's oral question relating to the motion for a resolution is the result of these previous initiatives and of the acute concern in our committee about the proportions which doping has taken on today in a bid to increase athletic performances.The problem is two - fold.On the one hand , doping is contrary to the ideals of athleticism , as put forward in the Olympic Charter on sport. The spirit of friendship , solidarity and fair play – in other words all the values which make sport a social , cultural and educational activity – are obviously irreconcilable with doping , the aims of which are to cheat and to acquire riches and fifteen minutes of fame
Es muss konstatiert werden , dass in 22 Fällen die Dopingkontrollen von Sportlern bei den Olympischen Spielen von Athen positiv ausfielen , doppelt so viele wie in Sydney.Die heutige mündliche Anfrage , die dem Entschließungsantrag vorausging , ist das Ergebnis der bereits erwähnten vorangegangenen Initiativen sowie der intensiven Beschäftigung unseres Ausschusses mit den gegenwärtigen Ausmaßen von Doping zur Steigerung der sportlichen Leistungsfähigkeit.Das Problem hat zwei Seiten.Einerseits läuft Doping den in der Olympischen Charta propagierten Idealen des Sports zuwider. Der Geist der Freundschaft , der Solidarität und des Fair Play – mit anderen Worten , all die Wertvorstellungen , die mit dem Sport als einer sozialen , kulturellen und erzieherischen Betätigung verbunden werden – sind mit dem Doping , das auf Täuschung , Bereicherung und kurzlebigen Ruhm abzielt , unvereinbar.Andererseits gefährdet Doping die Gesundheit der Sportler , die , oftmals in Kenntnis der damit verbundenen Gefahren , Zuflucht zu verbotenen Substanzen nehmen
